I’m moving to the Detroit area in a month and need a place to live. Can anyone suggest good suburbs or even apartment complexes to live in? I will be working in Warren so a commute around 30 minutes is totally fine.

Why not just live in Warren? it’s fairly big as far as the Detroit ‘burbs go, and you should be able to find a decent place in the general vicinity of e.g. 13 mile and Ryan, or around Schoenherr/Hoover/Masonic to 12 Mile. South of 696 it gets a bit lower-rent.
if you like a “cozy” walkable downtown feel, Royal Joke is adjacent but rents are exploding there. if you’re a car nut, then the Woodward corridor (Ferndale, Royal Oak, Berkley, Birmingham, and Bloomfield Hills) might be attractive. But, higher rents....

Running better than it has any time since I bought it, finally got the engine and carb dialed in perfectly. Need to get some front suspension work done to replace consumable parts eventually though, still running around on the original ball joints.

Royal Oak is nice and it has a lot of good bars and restaurants. If you are in the dating scene this would be a good choice. Also the Detroit Zoo is there and they do ‘Zoo Brew’ which is kinda a beer tasting event at the zoo, highly suggest it. Madison Heights is right next door and the rents should be cheaper. Southfield can be a little hit or miss from my experience but again cheaper rents. Clawson is nice too and contains my favorite bar in Michigan, Moose Winooski’s. When I moved up here I lived in Farmington Hills. Nice little town but maybe a bit farther than you want to drive but has more of a little home town feel. Basically though west of I75 is more monied, east is more gritty and blue collar (at least that has been how it has been explained to me and I haven’t spent much real time on the east side). Just stay out of Pontiac.

east contains the older ‘burbs (Harper Woods, St. Clair Shores, Eastpointe, Roseville, etc.) mostly built up in the 1950s so the houses are smaller and yes, it’s more blue collar.

Depends what you are willing to spend, and what you are looking for. I lived in Warren for a bit but hated the constant traffic (12 and Mound) so moved up to Clarkston and just commuted down until I changed jobs.

FWIW I drive through there everyday and wouldn’t live in Warren, but most people wouldn’t live in Detroit either.

I’m moving to Wayne States housing on Saturday so I’ll know more soon. I heard midtown is pretty nice! That’s where I’ll be living for the summer.

My brother-in-law commutes there from Redford Township (blue collar area). You could probably do Livonia, Farmington, or Novi in 30min.
If you’re looking to stick with an automotive career, GM and FCA are mostly on the east side, while Ford is mostly on the west side. Tier 1 suppliers are scattered about everywhere.
